A group of students Sausage Tree has helped
Over the last few years it has become increasingly apparent that more and more children are struggling to find the funding to attend school and college. Within African society it has always been the duty of the extended family to support any members within that family that need help. This traditional strength is now putting incredible pressure on families as too many children are losing one or both parents to AIDS. The burden of more children to try and feed and educate results in whole families being dragged too far below the poverty line to survive. Severe malnutrition and preventable diseases increase and school attendance rates plummet.
Sausage Tree has started helping a number of orphaned and vulnerable children through school and college. These students have to apply to a local committee giving reasons for their application with references and past school reports. They are chosen by the headteacher and are all orphans or from vulnerable families. Each term their reports are given to the committee and as long as they are satisfactory then funds will be given for the forth-coming term. Unfortunately the number of applicants is always too great.
So far Sausage Tree has helped:
- Train 15 teachers
- 17 students have also graduated from college, including…
- 1 Electrician
- 2 Nurses
- 10 Tour guides
- 1 Plumber
- 1 studied Catering Management
- 1 studied Public Administration
- 1 studied Wildlife Management and Natural Resources
- 46 children have finished school (grade 12)
Sausage Tree is currently supporting:
- We are supporting 36 in secondary school
- We are financing 2 teachers through teacher training college
We can do so much more with your help…

Patience is the librarian and school secretary at Chiwawatala School. She attended the school as a pupil. After attending Chiwawatala, Patience worked hard to further her education. This included walking 10km everyday to attend High School in Mfuwe. In 2008 she completed a course in computer skills studies. Although Patience has a real interest in all things digital, she has to travel 14km to access the internet. She hopes that one day their school will have access to the "global village".
Grace started at Chiwawatala in grade four and has just completed her seventh grade. She loves reading. Her favourite subjects are Mathematics, English, Civics, Religious Education, History, Geography, Environmental Science and Zambian Language. When she finishes school she want to be a teacher.
